On February 26, 2021, the DOST-Philippine Textile Research Institute (PTRI) invited the textile stakeholders to a webinar that tackled the Institute’s existing and new fabric and garment-related textile testing services.
"I have a confession to make, if you have not already figured it out, we at the DOST-PTRI, as first impressions go, we are a pretty corny and pretty sentimental bunch. What with topics titled, "Chem this be LAB", "Let’s Get Physical", "EUQAP-tivate Me", "Care for Label?", and "Happy Endings"? But less to be told, our people are a serious bunch of chemists, engineers, and technical experts in their particular fields. The PTRI itself is an ISO 9001-2015 certified institution, operating to ISO 17025-2017 PAB accredited laboratories. That's because textiles is a serious business. The serving of the highest standards worthy of promotion from assurance, safety, and pride of our people and country", a message from Director Celia B. Elumba.
The “TELA Lab ConFashion” webinar was an avenue for the Institute to bring forward its textile related testing services in support of and to promote quality assurance in textile and allied industries. As an ISO 17025:2017 accredited laboratory with state-of-the-art equipment and instruments capable of conducting chemical, mechanical, and microscopical laboratory textile testing, the DOST-PTRI is in the best position to discuss the importance of textile testing and how chemical, physical, and other fabric and garment tests can be of value to the stakeholders.
Why testing?
· To determine compliance to certain specifications
· To determine care instructions (i.e. washing, drying, etc.)
· To ensure your fabric’s performance can withstand regular use
· To verify advertisement claims
· To determine if cost translates to the quality
Reasons for Textile Testing
1. Research and Development
2. Quality Control
3. Comparative Evaluation
4. Analyzing Product Failure
5. End-use Performance
With DOST-PTRI textile testing services being performed in accordance with various standards such as PNS, ISO, AATCC, ASTM, IWS, JIS Standards, etc., it is also an agenda to integrate inclusivity and access to these tests, especially during this global crisis. Thus, through the network of laboratories across the country, anyone can access and submit samples for testing.
